‘Lithos’ Bench.

Solid English sweet chestnut and ash. Milk paint, oil and wax finish.

Reflecting my interest in irregular asymmetrical forms, this multi-functional bench can be used as both seat and table, perfect for hallways or reception rooms. With sustainability a core consideration of my practise, it is made from locally sourced English ash and sweet chestnut and finished with natural milk paint and oil and wax finishes.

Earlier this year (2025), I set out to create a statement piece that demonstrates my artistic interests, developing signature style and making philosophy.

In form and composition, the robust joinery of vernacular country furniture pairs with the geometric shapes and clean linear lines of mid-century modernism. The hand carved fluted channels and circular hollows accentuate the natural touchable tactility and warmth of the chestnut, a key feature of my work.

Aesthetically, I took inspiration from the enigmatic carvings that adorn the ancient rock formations and megalithic structures of the British Isles. A consciously romantic project, it reaches back to an idealised past, when humankind existed in raw unmediated connection to the natural world.

Positioned under low light and in partial shadow, the piece conjures images of firelit valleys, endless forests and still night skies.
